Turkey-free Thanksgiving!

PS: I forgot to mention that we are celebrating Thanksgiving by having our friends Daithi and Bridget over for dinner tomorrow. It will be Eric's first veggie Thanksgiving!!! Initially, he was resistant to the idea but he finally came around - I don't think the poor fella had ever thought he would be uttering those two words together in the same sentence, never mind having them on the same plate for his dinner. From his reaction you would swear it was an apocalyptic omen, like dogs and cats laying together or something. Which brings me nicely to the photo above (okay, it was a bit of stretch). I know it's cruel, and strange, to dress up animals in clothes for our enjoyment but they sure look cute, don't they?

What a funny Thanksgiving photo!
I hope Eric survived his first ever veggie Thanskgiving meal. Maybe it will become a new tradition for him. I would have liked that meal.

I absolutely can't wait for our Thanksgiving dinner tonight! Yippee!

I think there's a seasonal lesson in that photo for all of us...the dog and the cat CAN be friends...the indigenous person and the disease spreading, land stealing colonizer can be friends (mmm, less convincing)...and the morally superior vegetarian and the Earth destroyer carnivore can be friends, too!

And anyway, those animals look happy in the photo, right? Surely if that was cruel they'd have attacked the photographer or something.

Yes, look how much the dog is laughing! That kind of grin can't be faked.

Eric thinks that the morally superior vegetarian is missing the words 'nutritionally deficient'. I have to say I kind of like the name Earth destroyer carnivore. It sounds like a superhero.

See you tonight!

what was the menu for the veggie thanksgiving? I remember when Joe was a vegetarian and looked at Mom's turkey, saying," that looks almost good enough to eat". Therese

The menu for the veggie Thanksgiving came from two books, mainly from this great book called Leith's Vegetarian Bible. I had great fun thinking up what to make. I decided to try and have as many autumn American flavours as possible as Eric was feeling a bit homesick. This is what we had:

Starter
Rocket, beetroot and baked goat's cheese salad

(We had something similar at Jami and Jason's on our last visit and I've been dying to make it ever since.)

Main
Creamy leek and spinach pie with baked squash stuffed with mushroom brown rice

Dessert
Apple, maple syrup and pecan pie with vanilla ice-cream

I have to say that the recipes were excellent and it all turned out great on the night. Oh, we also had a nice cocktail when Daithi and Bridget arrived. I made a cranberry and orange juice mix which we added to some Lambrusco that we had from our visit to Bologna. Bridget had hers with sparkling water. It was pretty darn good if I do say so myself. I'm glad I thought of it because the Lambrusco on it's own was a bit rough.
Anyway, it was a lovely night. Good food with good friends - what more could a body ask for?

OK, it's time for me to chime in.
first, we DO have much to be thankful for, friends and family, both present and gone.
we had a small gathering this year, 11 in-laws + me & sal + Sheba

second, earth destroying carivore?
I devour meat, not mountains,
that's why god gave me meat-tearing teeth (few I have left)

thirdly, BEETROOT? my condolences to eric.

peace and love to all, the ben
